VISA and MC are widely accepted and some businesses will accept AMX. Remember to have $29.00 per person in dollars, colones or credit card for your exit tax when you depart Costa Rica. This is paid immediately after you enter the airport to the right. You will have a form to fill out after paying and then you can proceed to the check-in. You will get the best rate on your exit tax if paid in US Dollars. Please do not pay your exit tax at the small airports if you are flying within the country as they will service charge it.
